Putting Off An Easy Thing Makes It Hard. Putting Off A Hard Thing Makes It Impossible – G. Lorimer

What can I say about this one, hey? The Retaliator is always around, operating from within us. Some people call it “the inner spoilt brat”. Not all procrastination emanates from anxiety. Sometimes you just don’t feel like doing something productive. This is where The Retaliator comes to play.

The Retaliator is that rebellious voice within us that still behaves like a 3 year old. It’s impulsive and demands what it wants whenever it wants without any care whether it’s alright or not to do so. It is self centred and a bully. It demands you act on it’s desires so that it can relieve it’s own tensions.

It doesn’t care about your reputation and integrity. It doesn’t care about your successes and your respect towards other people. It is self seeking and seeks to please itself – period. It is responsible for holding many people captive of bad habits and never wants them to begin doing the right thing.

It requires effort and energy for you to undertake any form of work and the Retaliator doesn’t feel like expending effort. It makes sure work will not be done in time and give you reasons why it’s not wise to work on your goals on time or get to your destination on time.

It will give you reasons to procrastinate such as:-

“It’s too cold to get started”
“It’s too early to get started”
“You have a lot of time at your disposal, so wait!”
“This can be done quickly, so wait!”
“It’s late to get started today, you’ll have more time tomorrow.”
“I’m waiting to get money and resources to get started”

All of these ‘reasons’ sound logical, but they are merely excuses. The Retaliator is simply convincing you that putting off your projects for a later time is the best logical thing to do. It feels comfortable when you don’t have to do anything. If you want to do something, it begins looking for ways to hinder that progress, it will do anything to make sure you either pick up the phone and gossip, or watch TV, relax, have a nap and do things slowly to get to appointments late.

If you repeatedly allow The Retaliator to control your decisions, not only will
you end up procrastinating more and more; but you will also be constantly dissatisfied with your life, and you’ll feel powerless to do anything about it.

It’s time you create an awareness of this ‘inner spoilt brat’ Make sure you are aware of it when it begins making excuses and causing you to feel agitated to implement important tasks. Whenever it begins to speak, just ignore it and tell it to “Get behind me satan“, and do your work!
