Values are beliefs that are deeply rooted in your subconscious mind. There are what you perceive and believe as “truth” from your own perspective. In this world, you make friends, work for organizations and you behave a certain way based in large part on your values. Since most of these values are inside your subconscious mind it means you do things, react a certain way, behave a certain way unconsciously.
Values can be anything, maybe you value other people’s time, or you value the Earth and will do anything to help with protecting the world and it’s habitat. They are all values. It differs from one person to another. Most of the values you have came as a result of your up-bringing. Notice the word “came” In other words they were placed there by your parents, or guardians, teachers, community leaders, religious leaders, etc….Some values even came as a result of mixing up with various people from all walks of life.
What is important for you to know is that, values are acquired, we get them from somewhere and we install them in our own lives. They become part of us and we then behave a certain way and react a certain way being guided by these invisible forces from inside.
Bare in mind, since there are many values out there in people’s lives, there are values that limit people to reach their full potential and to experience true happiness. These are what I call limiting values. Conversely, there are those values that empower people, that guides people to reach their full potential and maximize their potential, those values are what I call empowering values.
As I said before, Values operate from the subconscious mind. This means you do things unconsciously or automatically without having to sit down and go through right or wrong. Since they are your own deeply held truths or beliefs, in many instances you don’t know if what you are doing is right or wrong. In other cases, you may know that your values are limiting you, but you just don’t know how to get rid of them. You feel like you can’t part with your value as you believe it is what defines you or give you an identity. That is true, but if the value is a limiting one, you need to get rid of it and put on a identity or value that will boost you up to be more effective in your endeavors.
We live life based on our values. When it comes to decision making, you tend to choose Option A Instead of Option B, because Option A feels right to you, and defines what you believe is right or wrong way to deal with any situation at hand. People quarrel and fight because their values would’ve been challenged and violated. They feel exposed and in an effort not to feel exposed and lose their identity, they fight to protect their values.
What I want you to do is to reach your full potential in this life. To use your abilities and education to become the best at what you do. This means we need to go through Value Analysis, to see if there are any values that are limiting you and also if there are any values that are empowering you and for you to be 100% aware of them and to press on them and become successful in life.
Value Analysis
I want you to make a list of what is important to your life. This is a list of those things you need to be happy and live life with peace within you. Examples might be love, friends, wealthy, family, independence, integrity, wisdom, security, etc At this time, quantity not quality is important. Then go through your evaluation and selection process and reduce your list to 10 values. After that, go through the evaluation and selection process and score your values between 1 and 5 based on importance. The top 5 with the most scores will then become your critical values. Also arrange them in order of preference. Life will feel fulfilling when what you do revolves around and includes these core values.
